Obituary for Griswold Bruce Holman Jr.

G. Bruce Holman, Jr. died peacefully early June 24 after a life just short of 95 years. Born in Passaic, he lived his entire life in Rutherford except for his last year (The Cupola in Paramus), college years (UVM), U.S. Army years during WW II (stateside), and graduate school years (U of MN). Bruce was preceded in death by his parents, Griswold and Orrell Holman, long lifetime Rutherfordians, and his single sibling, Orrell Nilsson of Roseville, MN, who died at 93, just two months before him. He is survived by nieces Kristina (MA), Elsa (MN) and Jenny (MN) and nephew Eric (MN), six grand- and three great-grand nieces and nephews, and honorary nephew, Cliff Witmyer. “Uncle Bruce” will be remembered fondly as Santa Claus, cat lover, expert downhill skier, voracious reader, consummate gardener, European traveler, admirer of Winston Churchill, life-long learner of many subjects, man of resolute opinions, and rug-cleaning exhibitor at the U.S. exhibit at the 1958 World’s Fair in Brussels. The family gives special thanks to Cliff Witmyer for his many years of devoted care; to Jerome Shuman for his patient, dauntless, round-the-clock service over the past year; to all the stellar staff at The Cupola in Paramus; to the angel Angelo for his helping hand; to Dr. Arnold Alday for his many years of expert care; to all the people at Cliffhanger Productions and Fun-Ghoul for their long-time kindness. A captivating presentation in his memory was held in Calhoun-Mania Funeral Home in Rutherford on Wednesday, August 2.
