Obituary for Bridget A. Heaney

Bridget A. Heaney

Bridget Agnes Heaney (nee Jordan), a resident of Wayne for the past three years passed away on January, 16, 2018. She was 99 years old. She was a former resident of Rutherford where she lived for over 60 years.
Bridget was born in Scramogue, County Roscommon, Ireland on October 5, 1918. She was one of nine children and raised on a farm. She immigrated to America at the age of 20 and arrived in New York Harbor in March 1939.
She lived in Brooklyn with her Aunt Nellie who sponsored her travel and worked as a nanny to many wealthy NY families. She enjoyed the NY Irish dance halls where she met Peter Heaney and they were married in 1948. They settled in Rutherford, NJ in 1952 where they raised their four children; Michael, Thomas, Maureen, and Patricia.

Three things defined Bridget; her family, her faith and always being on the go. She was always there when needed by anyone and was an avid letter writer, keeping in touch with her family here and abroad. She cherished the many letters, cards and photos she received from her family and friends. She loved her Irish music especially listening to Fordham University Ceol na nGael. Bridget traveled to Ireland to visit her large family as often as possible making her final trip at the age of 94. She adored her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was happiest with a houseful of family around her.

She attended church weekly, sometimes daily, and had a strong religious faith which carried her through difficult times. She was never without her rosary beads and was fond of making frequent stops at churches. Throughout the years, she volunteered for everything connected with St. Mary’s Church and school, whether it was kitchen help, PTA bake sales, Father Mike’s church cleaning crew, or Bingo.

In her later years and well into her 90s, she could be found taking the bus to nearby churches of Lyndhurst and North Arlington on a regular basis. After moving to an assisted living residence in 2014 she attended mass whenever possible at Our Lady of Consolation in Wayne and felt greatly comforted there.

Bridget was always ready to go at a moment’s notice. Whether it was bus trips with her different clubs, marching in the St. Patrick Day parade, attending Irish concerts or dances, going to the AC casinos, visiting friends or just shopping, she was always on a go. She made every day an adventure and lived life to the fullest.

She was a member of the Church of Saint Mary in Rutherford, a member of the Rosary Altar Society for over 50 years, a member of the Golden Agers and a proud Irish American Ambassador for Bergen County.
Bridget leaves behind her devoted children, Dr. Michael Heaney and wife Eileen, Maureen Alexander and husband Paul, Patricia Salvati and husband Vincent, six grandchildren: Christine, Paul, Bethany, Kate, Michael, and Daniel, three great grandchildren: Bridget, Elliana, Lily and many nieces and nephews in Ireland, England and the United States. She is predeceased by her husband Peter (2000), son Thomas (1985), eight siblings and grandchild, Lauren (1989).
