Obituary for Edward Andrew "“Wimpy”" Thomas

Edward Andrew "“Wimpy”" Thomas
Edward Andrew Thomas, 80, of Rutherford, NJ passed away on Saturday, January 20th, 2018 at the Paramus Veterans Memorial Home. Edward was born on September 18th, 1937 in Sacramento, California. At a very young age, he enlisted in the United States Army where he honorably fought in the Korean War. As a member of the Army Airborne Division, Edward served as a Paratrooper and would always tell family and friends, “I got paid to jump out of a perfectly good airplane”.

Edward met his first wife and had two children, Edward and Loriann. Then, in July of 1977, Edward married Marie Stephanie Benson (Trombino) at the Heart of Reno Chapel, in Reno, Nevada. (Marie had two children from a previous marriage, Stephanie and Donna Jean.) On September 18th, 1978, they welcomed their daughter, Dymphna Marie. In 1982, they purchased their home on Park Avenue in Rutherford and this is where they have been making great memories with wonderful friends and neighbors until this day.

“Perfume Eddie” spent his professional career as a truck driver, employed by Givaudan-Roure for 36 years until his retirement in 2002. He was the man to know when you needed perfume/cologne for the holidays. Since Edward “EAT” was not one to just sit around, he began working with Dymphna as a Supervisor for Aramark at Giant Stadium/Continental Arena/Meadowlands Racetrack. Here he enjoyed working the outdoor, private parties and the many close friendships he made along the way.
Edward “The Mayor” loved sitting on his front porch, reading the newspaper and greeting friends and neighbors with a gentle wave of the hand as they passed by. The front porch was the “happy hour hangout” where many friends would gather and share good times.
Edward was very handy and could fix anything! With any inclement weather, he could be seen wearing his bright yellow rain gear, clearing out the storm drains or shoveling snow.
For many years, Edward enjoyed bowling, fishing, NASCAR, and dancing. In later years, he worked at the voting station for the elections.
He was always the life of the party and would never miss sitting down to a good meal.
Edward touched the lives of many people and those who knew him will miss him dearly. He is survived by his loving wife, Marie, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He would always say:
“Never say goodbye, say… until later, cause we might meet again”
Family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 24th from 3pm to 7pm in the Calhoun-Mania Funeral Home, 19 Lincoln Ave., Rutherford. 6:30pm Religious Service and United States Army Guard Flag Presentation.
