Sister Mary, CSJP (known in religion as Sr. John Francis), of Englewood Cliffs, NJ, died peacefully on the evening of April 3, 2018.
She was born March 14, 1923 in Saddle River, NJ, to the late John Francis and Kathryn Rynn Donohue.
Sister Mary entered the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace at St. Michael Villa Novitiate in Englewood Cliffs, NJ on July 31, 1947 and pronounced final vows on August 22, 1953.
An educator and graduate of Seton Hall University and Duquesne University, Sr. Mary taught in Our Lady of Peace, Fords, NJ and St. Anne’s School, Fair Lawn, NJ before accepting a four-year assignment at St. James High School in Penns Grove, NJ. This was followed by four years at Madonna High School, Weirton, West Virginia, after which she returned to Penns Grove, first as teacher and Vice-Principal at St. James High School, and then as Principal of St. James Regional Grammar School. Her ministry in Penns Grove spanned 38 years.
Sr. Mary’s appointment as Congregation Secretary and Treasurer in 1988 took her to Washington, DC. She returned to NJ in 1991 to join the York Street Project, a ministry sponsored by the Congregation, as Director of St. Mary's Residence in Jersey City where she joyfully served until retirement to St. Michael Villa in 2004.
Sr. Mary was pre-deceased by her brothers John, Andrew, William and Thomas Donohue, sisters Helen Donohue, Margaret Oldham and Rita Masterson, and nephew Jack Oldham. She is survived by 20 nieces and nephews: Mary Ellen (Warwick), Kate (Warwick), Ann (Colantuono), Joan (Ianacone), Eileen and Margaret Masterson; Fr. Pat, Sr. Terry, CSJP, John, Bill, Maureen and Alicia (Cannon) Donohue; Sheila (O’Neill), Noreen (Savaria) and Tom Donohue; Jane (Ciaccio), Rose (Jewell), Maggie, James and Tom Oldham, and numerous grand nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Friday, April 6 from 2 – 6 PM at St. Michael Villa, 399 Hudson Terrace, Englewood Cliffs, NJ. Liturgy of Christian Burial will be on Saturday, April 7 at 9:30 AM in St. Michael Villa chapel. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington, NJ. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the York Street Project, 89 York Street, Jersey City, NJ.
