Obituary for Virginia Marie Conlon


Virginia Marie Conlon (nee Scully), 93, a longtime resident of Rutherford, passed away Friday, May 4th, 2018.
Born in Kearny NJ to Joseph & Helen Scully in 1924.

After graduating Kearny High School, Virginia attended Katherine Gibbs School in New York. Upon graduation, she worked for the War Production Board in New York. She deeply loved and married the late James J. Conlon Jr. (2001), a Corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps. The couple began their family in Levittown, NY and moved to Rutherford where they remained for 63 years.
After raising her family, Virginia went back to Katherine Gibbs for a refresher and was employed by Fairleigh Dickinson University as secretary to the Dean of Nursing for 10 years before retiring in 1989.

Virginia was a member of the Rosary Altar Society of St. Mary’s and was an organist and cantor for funerals there. She was also a Member of the KIP Center in Rutherford, and particularly enjoyed its Writing Group, which published the book “There’s Still Time”.
Incredibly creative, Virginia was a pianist, artist, writer, and poet. She published three books: “Tapestry”, “Something Else”, and “Beloved Son”. She left her family hundreds of paintings and sketches.

Virginia was a mother of 9 children, she is predeceased by her son Michael (1989). She will be affectionately missed by her 8 beloved children; James & wife Mary, Mary Patichio, Virginia Conlon, Kathleen Laico & husband Tony, Theresa Conlon, Joseph Conlon, Jeanmarie Yoo & husband Sang and Thomas Conlon, 10 Grandchildren; Juliet, Mara, Michael, Sara, Anthony, Jean Anne, Colleen, Liam, James, Thomas and 8 great grandchildren; Tara, Qasim, Jackson, Emily, Austin, Logan, Abigail & Copeland. She is predeceased by her brother Joseph Scully (1998).

Family will receive friends Monday 4-8pm in the Calhoun-Mania Funeral Home, 19 Lincoln Ave., Rutherford. Funeral Tuesday 9:30am from Funeral Home for 10:30am Mass of Christian Liturgy in the Church of Saint Mary, Rutherford. Interment in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the KIP Center, 55 Kip Avenue Rutherford, NJ 07070.
