Theodore Lloyd Van Winkle,Esq., 91, of Rutherford, died on Tuesday, August 21, 2018.
He was born in Passaic on March 9, 1927, the son of Theodore and Elizabeth Lloyd Van Winkle. He was a life-long resident of Rutherford. He married Katherine Sinclaire on July 8, 1949. She died on February 22, 1968. He married Geraldine Muro Tanella on May 3, 1969.
He became interested in astronomy as a child. He built his own four-inch reflector telescope while in Junior High School. He became a member for many years of the Amateur Astronomer's Association. Also, while in Junior High School, he became a member of the National Rifle Association, and won many sharpshooting medals.
He graduated from Rutherford High School in 1944, third in his class and a member of the National Honor Society in his junior and senior years. He was also a member of Civil Air Patrol. He was a recipient of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Science award. He attended Lehigh University where he played football, basketball, and wrestled.
At the end of his freshman year, he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard during World War ll.
After World War Il, he returned to Lehigh but left school in the middle of his sophomore year when his father died in 1947. He entered the family business, A.W. Van Winkle & Co., the oldest real estate firm in the United States. He attended Rutgers
University College night school in Newark, NJ from which he graduated with honors with a B.A. degree in History.
After graduation, he resigned as Vice President and Treasurer of A.W. Van Winkle & Co., and entered Rutgers University School of Law in Newark. He graduated second in his class with an L.L.B. degree. After clerking for Robert B. Hermes in Rutherford, he passed the New Jersey Bar Examination and opened a general law practice in Rutherford.
He was a former Trustee of the Rutherford Board of Education; a former judge of the Rutherford Municipal Court and the East Rutherford Municipal Court; and former Borough of Rutherford Legal Assistant and Acting Borough Attorney.
He was a charter Board Member and former Treasurer of the Rutherford Community Blood Bank. He also served as Treasurer of the Friends of the Library (15 years), Rutherford Public Library Centennial Committee, First Presbyterian Church School (26 years) and Cub Scouts.
He was active in Lions International for more than 70 years, having been named a Melvin Jones Fellow (the highest award in Lionism). He was former Treasurer (19 years) of the Lions Club of Rutherford, as well as President and Life Member. He was a former District 16A Zone Chairman, New Jersey Lions State Chairman of the Jamesburg Project Committee and the Constitution and By-Laws Committee. He was Lions State Coordinator for Volunteers in Parole, and was named New Jersey State Volunteers in Parole, Man of the Year. He received the International Presidents Achievement Award.
He was a bridge teacher and former Tournament Director of the Rutherford Town Club, where he won the individual Club Championship twice and the Open Pairs Championship three times. He was a member and Tournament Director of the Life Begins at Forty Duplicate Bridge Club. He was, and a member of the American Contract Bridge League.
He was also a volunteer driver for Starfish of Rutherford, Inc.;
a former Vice President and Treasurer of the Wincast Company and Waling Land Company; a former Seniors Golf Champion, Pequot Golf Club; a founding member of the Royal Baboons, and member of the Masons Island Yacht Club, the Southeastern New England Senior Golf Association and AARP; Life Member of the Mystic Seaport Museum and the Holland Society of New York; a member of the American Legion; and a member of the American Bar Association, the New Jersey State Bar Association and the Bergen County Bar Association.
He is survived by his wife, Geraldine; two children, Katherine Weber of Highland Lakes, NJ, and Nancy Cashman of Yonkers, NY; one stepson, John Tanella of Rutherford, NJ; two grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his step-mother, Miriam MacCready Van Winkle, his first wife, Katherine Sinclaire Van Winkle and three children, Margaret Van Winkle Alking, Patricia Jean Van Winkle, and Richard Lloyd Van Winkle.
Family will receive friends Friday, August 24th from 4 to 8pm in the Calhoun-Mania Funeral Home, 19 Lincoln Ave., Rutherford.
