Obituary for Andrew E. Bertone
Andrew “Andy” E. Bertone, former Mayor of Rutherford, passed away quietly on Sunday, December 16, 2018, surrounded by his children. He was 91 years old. Andy will be remembered as a loving husband to his late wife, Pauline (nee LiCalsi) of 57 years, father, grandfather, public servant, Rutherford Councilman and Mayor, WWII veteran, and friend to many in his beloved town of Rutherford where he resided for 61 years. Andrew is survived by his children, Pamela Steele and husband Robert, Cynthia Frazier, Andrew and wife Mary Kate, Mary Alice Rogoff and husband Marc, and Lisa Wheeler and husband Brian, along with 11 grandchildren, Kristina Evans and husband Christopher, Anthony Steele, Greyson, Cole, and Jordan Frazier, Bridget and Nicholas Bertone, Michelle, Shayna, and Martin Rogoff, and Nina-Marie Wheeler.
Andrew was born and raised in Jersey City, son of Anthony Bertone and Dellora (née Silvestri) Bertone of Jersey City and North Bergen. During World War II, he enlisted in the Navy at age 17 and saw active duty in the South Pacific. After returning home, he attended Fairleigh Dickinson University where he graduated with a degree in Bachelor of Science, and began a 30-year career with the Mobil Oil Corporation in New York City as a Medical Technician and later as a toxicologist.
After his retirement from Mobil, he continued to work in the medical field, but he will be best remembered as someone who tirelessly served his community and spent countless hours volunteering for others.
He was a parishioner, lecturer and Eucharistic minister for St. Mary’s Church of Rutherford for over 50 years. He was proud of his 30 years of service on the Rutherford town council, including two terms as Mayor of Rutherford from 1992 to 2000. As mayor, Andrew always commented on how he enjoyed helping people and officiating at weddings during his tenure. Volunteering was an important part of Andy’s life, dedicating himself to many local committees and organizations,including over 50 years of volunteering for the Rutherford Community Blood Bank and the Rutherford Red Cross, in addition to decades of service to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the CDC, The Rutherford Old Guard, Kip Center and, forever proud of his Italian heritage, he was instrumental in organizing, and was the president of, the Rutherford Chapter of UNICO, the largest Italian-American service organization in the country.
He will be always remembered and truly missed by his children, grandchildren and all who knew and worked with him.
Family will welcome friends Wednesday from 4pm to 8pm in the Calhoun-Mania Funeral Home, 19 Lincoln Ave., Rutherford.
Funeral Thursday 8:30am from Funeral Home for 9:30am Mass of Christian Liturgy in the Church of Saint Mary, Rutherford,
followed by Entombment in Holy Cross Mausoleum, No. Arlington.
