Obituary for Taide Johnson Atwater

Taide Johnson Atwater, 101, died peacefully on Sunday, February 17th, 2013.
She was the beloved wife of the late Jay Atwater and the loving mother of the late Henry C. Johnson. She is survived by her loving daughter-in-law, Lillian Johnson and her grandchildren; Michael Johnson, Catherine and her husband Joseph Baviello, Thomas Johnson, Robert and his wife Karen Johnson, and Elizabeth and her husband Nadar Roshandel; her great grandchildren, Kate, Jessica, Henry, Peter, Quinn, and Kian.

How does one begin to describe the life of a woman who for as long as we remember when asked about her age her answer always was the same...."I am 21 plus!" A lifelong New Yorker, her life was as colorful as her wardrobe. Her style was quite eclectic, from her leopard print bathing suits, to her gold and silver shoes and multi gem stoned pocketbooks, it was nothing compared to her big personality. Although Taide was a petite woman in size, her fierce love for her family was beyond compare. She was a constant presence in her family member’s lives. All of her grandchildren and great grandchildren had a special bond with her. So many endearing memories are shared by all of us. Whether it was summer trips to Atlantic City (where she said clocks didn't work so we never knew what time it was when she let us stay on the boardwalk until very late in the night!) or trips to visit her in her small yet lively New York City apartment, where we were allowed to eat dinner on fold up trays in front of the TV!! Her love for us was so obvious by just the way she spoke to us, making us all feel like we were her favorite. The very essence of a great family is unconditional love, which is exactly what Taide personified in every kind word and action. Even during the last years of her life she looked at her youngest great grandson just like she did her first great grandson, with unspoken love through her beautiful brown eyes.

Her early years were also a perfect fit with her personality, from owning a florist to working as a hair stylist; she had stories that would never leave you bored.

A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, March 17TH, 2:00PM to 4:00PM in The Collins Calhoun Funeral Home, 19 Lincoln Avenue, Rutherford,NJ.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory would be appreciated to the Tomorrows Children Fund, Hackensack NJ
