Obituary for Joan F. Janson (Weber)

Joan Florence Janson (nee Weber), a longtime resident of Rutherford, NJ, died on November 9, 2014 at the age of 68 surrounded by her family after a hard-fought battle with brain cancer.

Devoted mother to daughter Jill Janson Calsetta and her husband Mike Calsetta; son Eric J. Janson and his wife Danielle (Grauso) Janson; and beloved “Omi” to her grandchildren, Jacob and Sarah Janson, Justin and Zachary Calsetta. She is survived also by her loving sister Carrie (Weber) Hook and brother Roger Weber, her aunt Adele (Weber) Johnston, many nieces and nephews, and so many devoted, lifelong friends.

Joan was born in Hoboken, NJ to Yvonne (Withrow) Weber and George Weber on August 28, 1946 and grew up on Norwood Avenue in Lodi, NJ. A graduate of Lodi High School (Class of 1964), Dover Business College, and later Bergen Community College for her degree in Business Administration. Over the years, she owned her own business, held executive and sales positions with several area firms, and in the last decade was a professional recruiter and Career Services Director for a culinary and medical vocational school.
She was active in Rutherford civic groups and the women’s philanthropic organization, Zonta International.

Everyone felt welcome and completely at home in Joan’s house. Joan was a consummate hostess, cooking and baking and entertaining family and friends for holidays and events of her own making.

Joan was a natural born networker, had a contact in just about any field or industry imaginable, and didn’t know how to do anything on a small scale. Even when she was “off-duty”, she was working her magic to put people in touch to get things done.

Joan was a strong, independent person with a heart of gold and the energy of a woman half her age. She was as generous with her time as she was with her talents. She loved to travel and jumped a plane the moment she could put a few vacation days together. Her home was filled with art and trinkets from all the places she visited. Her shelves were filled with photos and photo albums of not only her kids and grandkids, but every group event, every cherished friend, every place in the world she had been.

Rather than focusing on the illness that stole her and her future from all of us without warning, or the past year of heartache and struggle and loss as she fought so courageously to remain with us, it would be Joan’s wish to fill the room with laughter and love and shared memories like we were all gathering around the table in her home for yet another occasion.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the John Theurer Cancer Center at HUMC, 360 Essex Street, Ste 301, Hackensack, NJ 07601 or the Autism Society of America, 4340 East West Hwy, Ste 350, Bethesda, MD 20814.
