Obituary for Irvin Eggeling

Irvin Eggeling, 95, longtime resident of Rutherford, passed away at home surrounded by his family on Wednesday, January 10th, 2018. Born in No. Bergen to Henry & Elsa Eggeling in 1922. Irvin graduated from Dickinson HS in Jersey City in 1940. Two years later, he enlisted in the US Army Air Corp during WWII. After one year serving in Tampa, Florida, he was assigned to the Air Bomb 701st Bomb Squadron and deployed overseas in 1943 attaining the rank of Sergeant. He served in the same group as “Jimmy Stewart”. He was proud to serve his Country.
Irvin returned home in No. Bergen. In time, he met Sheila who was a Dance Instructor at Arthur Murray Dance Studio, where he began taking dance lessons. One night, Sheila stepped in for his instructor and history was made. They fell in love and were married for 57 years. In 1962 they settled in Rutherford, where they raised their daughters.
Irvin was employed with the NJ Transit in Newark for 43 years. He started as a sweeper and retired as the Superintendent of Shops at 62 years old in 1985. He was a member of the VFW Post # 227, he loved road trips and Atlantic City.
Irvin is survived by his beloved wife Sheila (nee Gray) , his daughters; Margaret June Flees & husband David, Donna Davern & husband David, Lorraine Hurley, his cherished granddaughter Deirdra & fiance’ Tim Gilley (presently serving in the US Army), his sister Marie Hrbek in Ohio (turning 100 yrs. old, January13th, 2018), several nieces, nephews & friends. He is predeceased by his sister Edna Mc Williams,(1993).

Family will receive friends Friday 4-8pm in the Calhoun-Mania Funeral Home, 19 Lincoln Ave., Rutherford. Thereafter, Private Cremation.
