Walter Jr. was born in Bayonne, New Jersey before moving to Rutherford in June 1955.
He graduated from Horace Mann School in Bayonne, Bayonne Senior High School, and The American Academy / Mc Allister School in New York City.
Walter married his wife Mary (O'Donnell) of Bayonne in 1954.
Together they raised 5 children in Rutherford; their son, Walter R. Calhoun III and 4 daughters, Cathleen Lovett of West Yarmouth, Massachusetts, Carol L. Calhoun Dooley of Rutherford, Amy Calhoun Murphy of Greenville, SC and Beth Calvo of Rutherford. He and Mary are also the proud grandparents of Ryan Rupan, Lauren and Megan Lovett, Sean Dooley, Ryan and Brendan Quinones, Daniel Hooton, Erin J. Murphy, Andrew J. Calvo and their great grandson Camden Rupani.

From 1948-1949 Walter was an Estimator for Kraft Corrugated Container Co. in Bayonne.
In 1949-1955 he began his career in the funeral business for O'Brien Funeral Home in Bayonne, first as a trainee and later a licensed funeral director.
In 1955 when he moved to Rutherford and was employed with John T. Collins, Inc. as a Funeral Director. In 1962 he became Vice President of the firm and in 1968 Walter purchased John T. Collins, Inc. as Pres. and owner-manager of The Collins Calhoun Funeral Home.

From 1985 to 2009 he was joined by his son Walter R. Calhoun, III, who was given the position of Vice President .
In 2009 when his son Walter R. Calhoun III retired he was succeeded by Angelo G. Mania who has been affiliated with the firm since 1995 and is currently President., owner, Manager of the Collins Calhoun Funeral Home.

Walter Jr. and his wife Mary have enjoyed their life in Lavallette NJ for many years but they have begun a new chapter in Teaneck, NJ closer to their family and friends. Sadly, Mary Agnes Calhoun passed in October 2018. After Mary's passing, Walter decided to move to South Carolina to be closer to two of his daughters Carole Calhoun and Amy Murphy. 
Walter is enjoying the South Carolina weather and being close to his family and has retained his sharp wit and story telling.
